When will the battery charge and discharge? How do I control this?

Charging

By default, your battery will charge from excess solar power. That is:

  • Whenever the solar generation exceeds the load, rather than exporting to the grid, the energy will first be sent to the battery.
  • If the amount of excess solar energy exceeds the battery's maximum charging rate, then the overflow will be exported.
  • And when the battery reaches its maximum capacity, any further solar power will be exported to the grid.

Should I charge from the grid during off-peak periods?

You can opt to charge from the grid during off-peak periods by activating off-peak Grid Charging. You can then specify the capacity you wish to charge your battery to during off-peak periods. Charging:

  • will commence at the beginning of each off-peak period,
  • will occur at the specified maximum maximum rate,
  • and will continue until the battery level reaches the percentage entered into the "Pre-charge from Offpeak" field. If the battery level already exceeded this percentage at the beginning of the off-peak period, then charging will not occur.

Off-peak grid charging will not occur if you have a block or flat rate tariff.

Off-peak grid charging will not occur if you also opt to discharge during off-peak periods. (The discharging will take precedence).

Discharging

Discharging with Flat or Block Tariffs

So long as the battery level exceeds its minimum state of charge, your battery will automatically discharge whenever the load exceeds the available solar radiation. The rate of discharge will be constrained by the specified maximum, and the balance of the load will be met by the grid.

The Peak/Shoulder/Off-peak controls will be ignored when you've got a flat or Block tariff.

Discharging with Time of Use Tariffs

Specify whether the battery should discharge during peak and/or shoulder and/or off-peak periods.

So long as the battery level exceeds its minimum state of charge, your battery will discharge whenever the load exceeds the available solar radiation BUT only during the peak/shoulder/off-peak periods you specify that the battery is allowed to do so. The rate of discharge will be constrained by the specified maximum, and the balance of the load will be met by the grid.
